I want you to do a 40 minute public talk: What Happens to your Confidence?

communication speaking Apr 18, 2021

Public speaking - are you scared of it? It's got a name, you know. Do you know what you've got if you are one of the many people scared of public speaking?

Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking. The word glossophobia derives from the Greek γλῶσσα sosa, meaning tongue, and φόβος phobos, fear or dread (Wikipedia).

Sweaty palms, sick stomach, knocking knees and an inability to speak: yep, this is what just the thought of speaking publicly does to some folk.

Apparently, public speaking is up there on the stress and anxiety index - surpassing fear of death and spiders.

Seen as a social anxiety, many folk who would rather cover themselves with venomous spiders than talk publicly, also experience anxiety around rejection, fear of being judged and of being embarrassed.

Maybe I'm a freak because I LOVE public speaking...albeit that I am concerned about rejection and also suffer embarrassment when things go drastically wrong!

This weekend I have submitted two abstracts to conferences. Both may get rejected but, hell, I won't know I'm not good enough until I at least try.

This made me think about other's "anxiety around rejection, fear of being judged and of being embarrassed."

One thing that has caused me anxiety in the past is not knowing how to structure something.

To this end, I thought it may be helpful to other counselling and coaching practitioners wanting to submit to a professional conference, to see my submitted abstract to an international conference held in Brisbane.

3 ways to embed sustainability into your personal practice model.

Sustainability in practice is more than recycling paper and turning the lights off. Sustainability in practice is everything you do with clients in congruence to a global movement of transformation. Using The Junk Wave’s model of ‘Cubes of Change,’ workshop your brand juxtaposed to the values of your profession (people), your commitment to sustainability (planet), and income generation (profit).

Attendees will workshop each side of a cube answering 3 questions about their practice: What do I do that makes this good for people, planet and profit?

In the depth of that question lies skills and tools to pull out of the cube – the personal practice model that sets you apart from others in business.

If you experience being a square in a round “whole,” this workshop is for you. Get your "whole" right so you can thrive, survive, and embed sustainability into practice. Get out of your cubicle and into cubed service.

“What's in your cube” is code for the congruency between your Personal Practice Model and your triple P business model. Why cubes? They have more depth than a square, six interactive sides (Competency, Confidence, Compassion, Community, Courage, Connection) and hold sustainable volume of skill.

In this workshop, build a social business model on steroids: sustainable practice doesn’t fit the usual business model square whereas business models to the power of 3 put sustainability of people, planet and profit (triple P] as equal partners.

There is no secret, magic or academic words in this - it is just me being me and presenting what I do with my "Cubes of Change" model.

Also using my Cubes of Change model, I put in to present at an online conference exclusively for  Coaches, Consultants, Healers & Course Creators and hosted by the Sparkle Class Academy.

Am I scared of being rejected, being judged or being embarrassed? Of course. However, my fear of not having currency in presenting and in lacking peer review of my Cubes of Change model is far greater than the above, or being caught on stage with my pants down.

I want to hear your stories though: What Happens to your Confidence when you are asked to do a public talk?

Till next we speak; publicly or online, Mxxxx
