Cultural Night on Norfolk Island

boutreat norfolk island social work Dec 11, 2023

Our Cultural Night as part of our Radical Self Care and Eco Work Retreat included an Island Fish Fry and a welcome from Elder, Gaye Evans, one of Fletcher Christian's descendants.

Gaye (left) welcomed everyone in language, Norf'k, and succinctly traced her linage back to the Mutiny on the Bounty. Similar to Australian Indigenous communities, Norfolk Island has protocols, connection to country and strong family lineage links.

Also attended by the Commonwealth Administrator of Norfolk Island, Mr George Plant and his wife Meliame (middle and right), visitors, locals, residents and dual residents (like Emma and Michael from Emma and Toms), it was a lovely and relaxed night at Trade Winds Country Cottages.

Three cameo ghosts appeared and provided social history from two different Norfolk Island settlement periods. Many thanks to J.J Gehan who played convict Betty Thomas, Theo who played Soldier John Bayliss and Wes Steven (aka DJ Sausage) who played Fletcher Christian.

Two birthdays were celebrated during the retreat: happy birthday to two of the trainer/organisers, myself and Khadine from Embrace Empowerment.

The next retreat for Social Science workers on Norfolk Island is October 3-8 2024. We are going small ( #boutreat for a boutique retreat). Only one spot left so be very quick to contact me if you want to attend.

Many thanks for the photos Anne Maree Taney - Author.
